Transgender Awareness Week & Creating Trans Spaces: December 13, 2023

April 12, 2024

Celebrating Trans Awareness, Remembrance & Resilience Graphic

Transgender Awareness Week is held annually as a time of reflection that leads up to Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), also known as Trans Day of Resilience. It is a moment where the LGBTQ+ community looks back on the year, fully acknowledging the injustices that the trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive community face. Compassion & Choices is dedicated to providing spaces for individuals to join together in community and process grief and discuss death and dying.

On December 13, please join us on zoom at 5:30 pm PST to share in conversation and discuss how to live fully while planning end of life care. Compassion  & Choices LGBTQ+ Engagement Director Osha Towers said, “Our hope is that this will provide our trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive community a much needed space to feel seen and heard.”

Osha continues, “The Human Rights Campaign shares that of those taken from us – 85% were people of color, 48% were Black trans women, and 42% were killed by someone they personally knew. We should all take the time to read their stories and hear about their lives. They were full people before and live on as we honor them. Let us also make space for the names that were not recorded but are still a part of our family. Community members will light candles across the country. Together we push for greater protections in trans care, a time where we will light fewer candles, and read shorter lists. For a future where all trans people can live and die fully as themselves, free of fear and harm.”
